For veterans
VGLI gets more expensive every five years.
It's the easy choice when you get out. Here's what it costs as you age, straight from the VA's own rate table, and what else you can do about it.

The clock starts the day you leave.
- The day you leave
SGLI keeps covering you, free.
- Day 120
Free SGLI coverage ends.
Up to 2 years if you're totally disabled when you leave.
- Day 240
Last day to get VGLI with no health review.
- 1 year and 120 days
Last day to apply for VGLI at all.
Apply after day 240 and expect health questions.
Three ways to stay covered.
Any of these can be the right call. Which one depends on your age, your health, and what you want left behind.
Keep VGLI.
No health review if you apply inside 240 days of leaving. It can be the right call for a while. But it's term insurance, so it never builds cash value, and the bill keeps rising with age.
Convert VGLI to whole life.
The VA says you can switch VGLI to a permanent policy, such as whole life, at any time through participating companies: no medical exam, standard premium rates. It can't be term, variable, or universal life. I'll check whether the companies I write for are on the VA's list.
Get your own policy.
Whole life, an IUL, or final expense, priced on your age and health today. Whole life and final expense lock the price for life. It costs more up front than VGLI at a young age, and it's yours outright, with cash value.
